While upgrading in Star Citizen may seem a bit complicated and confusing when you first start, you will eventually get the hang of it. This is how upgrading works. Say you have a certain ship that you want to upgrade. Upgrading the ship deletes the ship you previously had and replaces it with a more expensive, better one. Usually, the price of the upgrade is the price difference between the two ships.
All the bonus items on your ship, like the LTI (Lifetime Insurance), is transferred to your new ship, so you don’t have to worry about getting insurance again and paying the bills.
You also can not replace your ship with the one that is cheaper. So that means, downgrades are not possible. There’s no limit to how many times and how often you can upgrade your ship, so even if you wanted a different model you can upgrade it, provided it’s not cheaper than the original ship.
If you melt a ship, all upgrades are lost and they can not be retrieved or re-bought. You receive the full value of your upgrade when you melt a ship.
